Maxwell’s Demo Competition

First Prize: $500
Second Prize: $200

  • Any UM students can team up. Every team comes up with a bright idea and writes it up according to this example. Maxwell Demo Example
  • At least 5 teams will be selected and funded with up to $100 to build your demo. The selectedteams build their Demos and then present them on the competition day (Nov 20th). The judges will be invited professors and local teachers. (We will provide funding for the materials. At the end of the competition, the physical demos and written materials will become the property of the Optical Society at the University of Michigan)
  • 2 teams will be awarded with cash prize.
  • The Demos should present an idea related to Maxwell’s equations. This can include optics, EM, RF, ect.
  • The demos should be geared towards Middle school or High school aged kids.

Important Dates

  • Submission will open on Oct 1st
  • Phase I: Submit a written proposal in the format below by October 14th
  • Phase II: Demonstrate your demo on November 20th with a clear write-up that others would be able to use to give this demo in the future

  • Feasibility (20%)
  • Education (20%)
  • Creativity (20%)
  • Amusement (15%)
  • Low-Cost (15%)
  • Reproducibility (10%)
